Ist Place - FLW Canada Champinship

Man, What a week… Just got home a day ago, and It still hasn’t really hit me. Back in August, Dan and l qualified for the FLW Canada Championship on Rice lake, where we finished 7th place with a 2 day total of 36.I5 lbs. I was super pumped to qualify for the Championship on Big Rideau. The day I qualified, I called my boss, asked for some time off work. I took the week off, and Dan and l headed to Big Rideau to start practicing for the FLW Canada Championship. Coming into this event, knowing that this could take you to the Forrest Wood Cup, made us want the win that much more. We called my Dads truck “home” we lived, ate and slept in the truck, 6 days practice, and all 3 tournament days. We spent 2 days of practice, driving around, using the graph to cover as much water as we could and to get a feel for the lake. By the end of day 2 practice, we had an idea of where we were going to spend most of our practice fishing. By the 6th day of practice, we narrowed it down to one section of the lake where we found some bigger fish, and lots of them. In practice we found a couple topwater bite areas, along with some deeper fish. The topwater fish in practice were big, but when the tournament rolled around, it seemed like the bigger fish had moved off of our spots, and good keeper 3 pounders replaced them. We had 2 topwater spots, where I would throw a Dropshot and Dan would throw a topwater, with solid 3 pounders, a bunch of secondary stuff with 2 - 4 pounders and our big fish spot.

Day one rolls around, and we’re pumped. We have good fish going, and were fishing day one of the FLW Canada Championship! Going into the tournament, we figured around I8 lbs. a day would do it. We fished our topwater stuff early, got a pretty good limit in the boat quickly, and caught some good ones off of our big fish spot, and secondary spots which gave us a I7.98 lb sack for day one. Right where we wanted to be. Going into day 2 in 7th place.

Day 2 we were excited to get back out there. Day 2 is exciting because it’s the day to make it or break it to championship Sunday. Our goal from the start was to catch I8 lbs. a day and we figured we would be right there. There was a fog delay on day 2, and first thing that came to our mind was our topwater stuff. It usually died at about 9 am. We did our top water stuff anyway. I always threw the dropshot, and Dan would always throw the topwater. The bigger fish in practice would come on the topwater, and the smaller ones would usually come on the dropshot. Dan had 3 big blowups, but every one completely missed his bait, and didn’t want anything to do with a follow up bait. I ended up catching one 3 pounder, stuck around for 20 more minutes and left to go to our deeper stuff. By 4:00, we had about I7 pounds in the boat, and we really needed to cull a 3 pounder from the box. We figured that we had made it to Sunday with the bag we had and we wanted to save our big fish spot for the final day, so we made some last minute decisions in the last few minutes and fished some new water that looked very similar and we hoped had some good fish. In the last hour we caught a 4 lb Smallie and weighed a I8.3I sack for day 2 giving us a 2 day total of 36.29 and had us sitting in 2nd place going into the final day. Wooooop.

We were super pumped after weighing our I8 pound bag, knowing we made it to championship Sunday and knowing we have a shot at winning this thing. Throughout day one and day two, we caught one or two fish off our big fish spot each day, so we could save it for the final day.

Day 3, the final day and we were pumped to get on the water. The top ten met at Walmart for a quick meeting and off to the launch we went. Blast off was at 7 and check in was at 3. An hour less fishing than day one and two. We fished our top water spot first thing in the morning, and got 2 cute ones in the box.. We completely scrapped everything and stuck on our big fish spot all day. We wanted to win, and the only way we thought of having 20+ pound sack was to stay put. Danny would throw the tube, and I would throw the dropshot. Within the first few short minutes, we got our biggest fish of the day. We were fired up, but we needed 4 more just like that one to try and seal the deal. By around noon we caught 4 more keepers and had about I9 lbs in the boat… still not there yet. We figured we needed to cull the one three pounder with a 4 to have a good chance at winning. We grinded it out until about 2:00, and then left, and spent ten minutes at a couple of our secondary spots till we had to head in. We couldn’t get another bite. We only caught 6 fish all day, but they were the right ones.

All ten boats got to the launch, the boats were trailered and off to Walmart we went where the weigh in was. We were last in line to weigh in. We figured we had about I9 lbs, and it was a nail biter… Dan and l and Morison and Lapidus were the last 2 boats to weigh in. There were a bunch of big bags brought in and we thought for sure we were out of the race. Morison and Lapidus weighed an I8.84 pound bag which meant we needed a 20.I7 pound bag. We honestly thought it was over for us. Cory put our bag on the scales, Chris held the fish there for a second, let go, and the scales read 20.42 lbs. I completely blanked for a solid 3 seconds, looked at Dan, and realized we had just brought in a 20 lb sack to win the FLW Canada Championship !!

Words can’t describe how excited I am to head down to Kentucky Lake for a shot at fishing the Forrest Wood Cup next November. It was an incredible week, a week I will never forget. So many people to thank, including my parents, all of our fishing friends, Cory and the guys at FLW Canada, Chris Jones, Pure Fishing, and everyone for their continued help and support. You all rock.

Wooooop, Coop ><>

5th Place CSFL - Rice Lake

Super fun day on the water this past weekend fishing the CSFL Bassmania event on Rice Lake. Started out the morning on the drive up when I realized the boat was not plugged in all night.. but it ended up working out alright, when we showed up to the launch and there was a 2 hour fog delay. So we plugged in the boat, and got as much juice as we could before blast off.  Blast off was at 9, and off to our spot we went, dropped the trolling motor, put our heads down, and grinded it out all day long. Bites were far and few in between, but when we got bit, it was a good one. I knew my trolling motor was going to die at some point in the day, it was just a matter of time. The winds were howling all day long and was 100% on the motor pretty well until one o'clock when it died. So we put the drift sock out, and drifted around hoping to get bit to get a limit in the boat.. We just couldn't get that fifth bite and ended up bringing 18 pounds to the scale, won big fish, and finished 5th overall. Super fun day on the water, wooooooooop. Now, time to start thinking about and preparing for the FLW canada championship on Big Rideau this September.. Can't wait

Ontario BASS Nation Qualifier

Was really hoping to make the Team this year, But didn’t pan out the way I wanted. Had some boat issues on day one and made some bad decisions, but learned a lot by the end of day 2. Pretty disappointed, but I learned a lot this past weekend.. HUGE congrats to all the boys who made Team Ontario this year. Big thanks to everyone at OBN, all the volunteers, Pete and Marg Garnier for their hospitality, Pure Fishing, my parents for their continued support, and everyone who make the qualifiers possible. Im definitely going to miss being with the team this year.. This is by far the tournament I look forward to the most every year, and I already can’t wait to get at it again next year in Petawawa.
Now, time to start thinking about and preparing for the FLW Championship on big Rideau coming up in September, WOOOP

FLW Canada, Rice Lake - 7th place finish

What a weekend fishing the FLW Canada event on Rice Lake. Me and Dan put in a lot of time previous to the tournament and really wanted to make the top ten finish. Of course cashing a good cheque would be nice, but really all we wanted, was to make the top I0 cut to punch a ticket to the FLW Canada championship on Big Rideau. Smallies is what wins on Rice 90% of the time, so thats what we needed to do to have a good chance at making the top I0, or maybe even having a chance at winning $I6,000. Myself or Danny have never really found some good smallies on the lake, so we had some work to do.. We spent about a week of pre fishing, and found one area on the lake we knew had some good ones around. Going into day one, we were pretty pumped, but were hoping to get a good limit to stay in it for day 2. Its a 2 day event and you gotta catch em good both days. We ran 6 spots on day one but only 2 of them produced our I8.I0 pound bag. We ended up scrapping all of our 6 spots, but 2 of them, and ended up pounding the 2 spots back and fourth on day 2. Right when we caught our I8 pounds on day one, we left those 2 spots for day 2. We figured if we left the rest of the fish, without risking to try and catch 20 pounds and fish the spot out, that if we got I8 a day we would make the cut. On day 2 we rolled up to our first spot and got 3 quick fish in the boat. a 31/2, a 4, and a 2 pounder. the rest of the day was a grind, but we stuck on those 2 spots all day long, fished slow, and ended up culling a couple times throughout the day, getting another I8 pound bag in the boat. We ended up finishing top ten, in 7th spot. We are headed to Big Rideau for the FLW Canada championship!!! Wooooooooooop, Man I love fishing

Bay Of Quinte Largemouth

I took my little buddy Nick Arnott to the Bay Of Quinte in search of some big Largemouth and we had a BLAST. Started the day off pretty slow, but by the end of the day we started to figure something out and caught a few good ones. We were fishing deep weed and trees all day long, which is what the Bay of Quinte is famous for. It is one of my favourite fisheries with tons of quality, healthy fish. I will be on this body of water a lot this year as the Ontario B.A.S.S Nation Qualifier is taking place mid Augest. My favourite tournament of the year. I have made the team 3 times now, and words can't describe how much I want to make it as a boater in my own boat. WOOOOOP

Steelhead Opener 2016

Was a super fun opener with the Arnott boys, but was very tough. Water was low, and not nearly as many fish as I expected. But camping out, eating soup and hotdogs over the fire, and freezing our butts off all night is really what it is all about.. VIDEO DROPPING SOON

Road Trip - Lake Fork

What a week up in Texas fishing Lake Fork.. Fellow Canadian Joe Ford guides 3 months of the year on Lake Fork. Shawn McCaul, a very close buddy of Joe, has went to Lake fork to fish 3 years and a row now. Both Joe and Shawn have been bugging us for the last year to go down and experience the trip of a lifetime. It all started when Shawn told me "Im going to Lake fork in 2 weeks, You coming?" At first I thought it was a joke, but then I realized he was serious. I went home that night, and told my self "I gottttttta go.." Lake Fork is one of the best Lakes in the US for giant Largemouth Bass. This is an awesome place to go if you want to catch a personal best. I ended up calling my boss to ask for the time off work, and being the awesome boss he is, he had no problem. I face booked Shawn right away, and said "woooop, It's a go." Dan also got the time off school to come down, and Cliff came with his boat as well. Off we went to Lake Fork, 2 boats and a truck load full of food, cloths and fishing gear. Off we went. The drive down took us about 26 hours with stopping for gas/food, etc. but It was an exciting drive, and didn't feel long at all. The morning after we arrived, Shawn and Cliff both took their boats out, while me and Dan went for a fish with Joe so he could show us around the lake and how it fishes. It can be real scary running around the Lake outside of the Buoys' if you don't no the reservoir. There is a ton of standing timber left throughout the lake which is kinda scary. There are trees 2 feet below the waters surface in 40 feet of water.... After Joe had shown us all around the Lake we were ready to rock. It was a cool time to go because with the weather they have been having down there, the fish were all over the place. We were fishing for Pre Spawn and Post Spawn fish on Secondary and main lake points. We were also fishing for bedding fish in the shallows up creeks arms, and back coves. But with the pressure, and the amount of boats fishing the beds, we spent most time fishing main lake and secondary points to try and catch those big girls that were just about to move up onto their beds, or Post spawners coming off and moving back into the main lake. Throughout the rest of the week I fished with Shawn and Cliff. Me and Dan even took out Joe's and Shawn's boat for the evening when they went golfing. (Im surprised they trusted us..) lol. Up until the 2rd day of fishing, I had only caught 2 cute ones.. both under I2 inches. But Joe told us if we did catch a fish up on these shell beds throwing these giant swimbaits and topwaters, it would be a good one. And thats what we wanted. A big girl. I threw my topwater and my giant swimbait pretty well the whole trip up on these shell beds. On the third day, around 9am, the lake was dead calm, and we rolled up to a shell bed on the main lake off a point. There was a pelican, and a bunch of loons feeding on big gizzard shad that these giant Largemouth eat all year long. Within a few casts I had a good one explode on my topwater but I missed it. He ate it again and I stuck him good. I new it was a good one but wasn't too sure how big. At first I yelled over to Danny and Shawn in the other boat "it's about 4" Then it jumped and I yelled "5 or 6", Then it got boat side and Cliff said "It's bigger than that dude.." I lipped her and got it in the boat, my personal best Largemouth Bass. I was super stoked to not only catch my personal best, but to get the whole thing on film as well.. As the week went on, the fishing got better. Danny caught a 6 pounder the next day, and I caught another good one over 5 the morning we left. And the day after we left, Joe put his clients on 2 over 7lbs. a 5, and a couple 3's...

It was also a super fun time hanging out with the Izumi and Macinnis family all week. Huge thanks Joe Ford for giving us this amazing opportunity and being an awesome guide, Scott at Fisherman's cove for the AMAZING hospitality, Steve for cooking all the delicious home cooked meals, and Cliff and Shawn for letting us come on such an awesome trip.

A week I will never forget.. I will be back next year....
